Die sicherste Differenzierung erfolgt anhand einer Genitaluntersuchung. Habituell lässt sich die Art von der sehr ähnlichen Mompha propinquella anhand folgender Merkmale unterscheiden:
- Mompha lacteella: Kopf, Thorax und Tegulae beige.
- M. propinquella: "Äußeres Erscheinungbild sehr ähnlich dem von M. lactella. Von dieser anhand des weißen Kopfes und Thorax zu unterscheiden; die Vorderflügel mit weißer Basis auf der Oberseite."
